If you have ever wondered what “capacity” really means at a theme park, spend 31 December in Orlando. By mid-morning in recent years, Magic Kingdom and EPCOT have been expected to stop letting new guests in, the roads around them are solid, and the evening is spent in the kind of crowd most people only see at a stadium. New Year’s Eve Disney World is the busiest night of the Orlando year, and it can still be a wonderful one, but only if you plan for what it actually is rather than what the photos suggest.

This guide covers where the fireworks are at each Disney park and at Universal, the hours and showtimes from the most recent New Year’s Eve, when parks fill up, how to get home after midnight, and the less obvious alternatives that give you most of the magic with a fraction of the crush, including the night before. Details for 31 December 2026 had not been announced when this was written in September 2026. Disney confirmed its 2025 showtimes in late October, so expect the 2026 schedule around the same time. The times below come from New Year’s Eve 2025, so use them as a strong guide to the pattern, not a promise.

What New Year’s Eve in the parks is actually like

Here’s the part the fireworks photos leave out.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest stretch of the year at Walt Disney World and Universal, and 31 December is the peak of that peak. Families on school holidays, annual passholders, locals, international visitors and people who come specifically for the countdown all converge on the same few parks on the same night. Queues for headline rides can run for hours. Walkways around the castle and the World Showcase lagoon become slow-moving crowds by late afternoon. Restaurant reservations for the evening are gone months ahead.

And then, at midnight, everyone leaves at once.

None of this means you shouldn’t do it. Counting down to midnight in front of Cinderella Castle with fireworks overhead is the kind of memory people talk about for decades. But it is an endurance event, not a relaxed evening, and the people who enjoy it most are the ones who knew that going in. If your group includes small children, anyone who struggles with crowds, or anyone who wants to ride things, keep reading before you commit.

Magic Kingdom on New Year’s Eve

The fireworks

On New Year’s Eve 2025, Magic Kingdom ran Fantasy in the Sky twice: at 7:30pm and again at 11:50pm. It did exactly the same on 30 December. The late show is the midnight countdown, and the one everyone wants. The early show is the same fireworks without the countdown, and it’s a much easier watch for families who aren’t staying up.

That repeat on 30 December is the most useful fact in this guide. If you want the New Year fireworks at Magic Kingdom without the worst of the New Year’s Eve crowd, go on 30 December. It’s still extremely busy, since that whole week is, but it’s not the single peak night of the year, and you get the same show.

Park capacity

Magic Kingdom was expected to reach capacity early on New Year’s Eve 2025, likely before 10am, and Park Pass reservations sold out for some ticket types. When a Disney park reaches capacity, it stops admitting guests who aren’t already inside or who don’t have a guaranteed entitlement, and for some guests that includes those planning to park hop in later.

The practical rules:

  • If you want to be inside Magic Kingdom on 31 December, arrive at opening and don’t leave. If you step out for a mid-afternoon rest at your hotel, you may not get back in.
  • Don’t rely on park hopping in for the evening. On a capacity day, that’s the plan most likely to fail.
  • Check your ticket type. Annual Passholders in particular should confirm their reservation requirements well in advance, because passholder availability can run out first.

Is it worth it?

For a couple or a group of adults who want the iconic countdown and are happy to spend a long day in a crowded park for it, yes. For families with children under about seven, or anyone expecting to ride much, it’s usually a poor trade: a 14- or 15-hour day in the most crowded park of the year, with the main event at 11:50pm. Take them on 30 December for the 7:30pm show and be back at the hotel by 9.

EPCOT on New Year’s Eve

EPCOT Spaceship Earth at dusk
EPCOT stays open latest of the four Disney parks on New Year’s Eve, until 1am in 2025.

EPCOT has the longest night of the four Disney parks. In 2025 it stayed open until 1am, ran its regular nighttime spectacular, Luminous: The Symphony of Us, at 6:30pm, then ran a dedicated New Year show, Cheers to the New Year: A Sparkling Celebration, at 11:54pm.

EPCOT’s New Year’s Eve has a different feel from Magic Kingdom’s. It’s more adult, with World Showcase’s bars and restaurants turning the lagoon promenade into something closer to a very large street party. That’s its appeal and its drawback. It’s a great night for adults who enjoy a crowd and a drink. It isn’t a relaxed family evening, and the World Showcase walkway between pavilions can become extremely slow as midnight approaches.

EPCOT was also expected to reach capacity early in 2025, so the same arrive-early, stay-put rule applies.

One timing detail to be aware of: the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays runs 27 November to 30 December 2026. It ends the day before New Year’s Eve, so the holiday kitchens and the Candlelight Processional won’t be there on the 31st. If they’re part of why you want EPCOT, go before the 31st. Our Festival of the Holidays guide has the details.

Hollywood Studios on New Year’s Eve

Hollywood Studios opened at 9am on New Year’s Eve 2025 and ran New Year Countdown Fireworks at 11:57pm, with live entertainment and DJ dance parties through the evening. It’s the most party-like of the Disney parks on the night, and in some ways the most fun for teenagers and young adults.

It’s still very busy, and it has the same midnight exit problem as the others. But if your group is more interested in a dance party than a castle, it’s worth a look. The park’s Star Wars and Toy Story lands make a full day there easier to fill than you might expect. Our Hollywood Studios guide covers the park itself.

Animal Kingdom: the quiet exception

Animal Kingdom doesn’t do New Year’s Eve. In 2025 it opened at 8am and closed at 6pm, with no countdown show. That makes it an interesting choice on the 31st for families who want a daytime park and then an evening somewhere calmer. It’s still busy during the day, because it’s still the busiest week of the year, but nobody is staying for midnight, and you can be back at your hotel for dinner. Our Animal Kingdom guide covers what to prioritise.

Universal Orlando on New Year’s Eve

Universal’s approach is similar in spirit and different in shape. In 2025:

  • Universal Studios Florida was open 8am to 1am, with DJ entertainment from 6:30pm and fireworks at midnight. This is Universal’s main New Year’s Eve park.
  • Islands of Adventure ran 10am to midnight.
  • Epic Universe ran 10am to midnight.
  • Universal CityWalk held its New Year’s Eve celebration from 4pm to 2am.

Two things work in Universal’s favour on New Year’s Eve. First, the Holidays at Universal Orlando season runs until 3 January 2027, so on the 31st you still get the holiday décor, the Grinchmas celebration in Seuss Landing and The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle projection show at Islands of Adventure. Second, the parks are within walking distance of each other and of CityWalk, so moving between them at night is simpler than at Disney.

Against that, Universal is extremely crowded that week too, and Express Pass prices peak. Our Christmas at Universal Orlando guide covers the holiday entertainment still running on the night, and our Express Pass guide covers whether it’s worth paying for during the holiday peak.

CityWalk and the Universal hotels

Hard Rock Cafe at Universal CityWalk lit up at night, its red sign reflected in the lagoon beside a water taxi
CityWalk stays open long after the parks close on New Year’s Eve, and it fills up accordingly.

CityWalk is Universal’s answer for adults who want the midnight moment without being inside a park. In recent years the celebration has included live bands, DJs and a midnight celebration with confetti on the main promenade. Individual bars and clubs may run their own ticketed packages. It’s free to walk around CityWalk itself, but expect a cover charge or package price at the popular venues on the night, and book well ahead. Our Universal CityWalk guide covers the venues.

Universal’s hotels have also sold their own ticketed New Year’s Eve events. For 2024 these ranged from about $32 to $1,350, from buffets to DJ parties and specialty dinners. The 2026 line-up had not been announced when we checked. If you’re staying at a Universal hotel, a hotel event can be a more comfortable way to see in the new year than a park, especially with children.

The smarter alternatives

For many visitors, the best New Year’s Eve in Orlando doesn’t involve being inside a park at midnight at all.

1. Go to Magic Kingdom on 30 December

Already covered above, but it’s the single best tip. The same Fantasy in the Sky show ran twice on both 30 and 31 December in 2025. You get the fireworks and a slightly less extreme crowd, and you’re not trying to get home at 1am on the busiest night of the year.

2. Watch from a resort

Fireworks rising above trees and buildings beyond the water, seen from Disney's BoardWalk at night
EPCOT fireworks seen from the BoardWalk. Several Disney resorts have views of the park shows across the water.

Several Disney resorts sit close enough to Magic Kingdom or EPCOT to see the fireworks from outside the park. The Seven Seas Lagoon resorts near Magic Kingdom and the BoardWalk area near EPCOT are the classic examples. The view isn’t the same as standing in front of the castle, and the music doesn’t carry, but it’s calmer, you can bring children in pyjamas, and you’re already home when it finishes. Resort grounds can be busy with other people who had the same idea, and some viewing areas may be restricted to registered hotel guests on the night, so check with your resort. Our Disney World resorts guide covers where each resort sits.

3. A daytime park, an evening elsewhere

Spend the day at Animal Kingdom, which closes at 6pm, or at a water park if the weather allows, then have a relaxed dinner and either watch fireworks from a distance or simply go to bed early. You’ll be the only people in the resort with energy on 1 January.

4. SeaWorld

SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration runs on select dates until 4 January 2027, with more than three million lights, holiday food and seasonal shows included with admission. Check whether it’s operating on 31 December and what evening entertainment is scheduled, because SeaWorld’s New Year’s Eve programme wasn’t published when we checked. As a holiday evening that’s much less intense than Disney or Universal on the same night, it’s worth a look. Our guide to SeaWorld’s seasonal events covers the Christmas Celebration.

5. Disney Springs

Disney Springs is free to enter and full of restaurants and bars, which makes it a natural New Year’s Eve option. Just know that it’s extremely busy that evening, parking garages fill, and table reservations go early. Don’t assume there will be a dedicated midnight show there. Check Disney’s announcements for the year. Our Disney Springs guide covers the practicalities.

Getting home after midnight

This is the part that ruins more New Year’s Eves than the crowds inside the parks. When tens of thousands of people leave a park at the same moment, the transport system cannot move them quickly, however well it’s run.

  • Disney buses, monorail and boats will have long queues for some time after the fireworks. Waits of an hour or more are realistic at the most crowded exits. The Skyliner (for EPCOT and Hollywood Studios resorts) and walking routes (for EPCOT’s BoardWalk-area resorts) are the most reliable escapes, but they have queues too.
  • Driving means a long, slow exit from the parking areas and heavy traffic on resort roads. If you drove to Magic Kingdom, remember you’re also queuing for the tram or ferry back to the Transportation and Ticket Center before you even reach your car.
  • Rideshare will be heavily surge-priced and slow to arrive, and pickup areas will be congested. Don’t count on a quick, cheap car at 12:15am.
  • Universal is a bit easier, because the hotels are within walking distance or a short water taxi ride of CityWalk and the parks. That’s a genuine advantage of staying on-site at Universal for New Year’s Eve.

A tactic that works: don’t try to leave straight after the fireworks. Stay put for half an hour, let the first surge pass, have a snack, and leave when the queues have started to shrink. You’ll get home at roughly the same time with much less standing in a crowd.

For the wider picture, see our guides to Disney World transportation and staying on-site versus off-site.

A realistic New Year’s Eve plan

For adults who want the midnight fireworks

  • Morning: arrive before opening at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT or Hollywood Studios, and don’t plan to leave.
  • Midday: take a long, seated lunch. You need the break more than the ride.
  • Afternoon: do the attractions you can, accept long queues, and find shade.
  • Evening: eat early, before the dinner crowds peak. Identify a fireworks spot by around 9–10pm at Magic Kingdom, and don’t lose it.
  • Midnight: countdown, fireworks, then wait out the first exit surge.

For families with young children

  • 30 December: Magic Kingdom for the day, the 7:30pm Fantasy in the Sky fireworks, and bed.
  • 31 December: Animal Kingdom or a quiet resort day, an early dinner, and fireworks from a resort viewing spot if the kids are still awake. Or a toast at 9pm and call it midnight.
  • 1 January: a slow morning and a pool day. Everyone else in Orlando is exhausted.

See our guides to Orlando theme parks with kids and Disney World with toddlers for more on pacing.

Eating on New Year’s Eve

Food is the thing people underestimate most on the 31st. With every park at or near capacity, quick-service queues stretch at normal mealtimes, and a table-service reservation for the evening is one of the hardest bookings of the year.

  • Book table service as early as the booking window allows. Disney dining reservations open 60 days ahead, and evening slots on 31 December at popular restaurants go almost immediately. If your plan depends on a specific dinner, set an alarm for the day the window opens.
  • Eat earlier than you normally would. A 4:30pm dinner feels odd, but it gets you fed before the evening rush and leaves you free to claim a fireworks spot.
  • Use mobile ordering for quick service. Order ahead in the Disney or Universal app and pick your return window well before you’re actually hungry, because windows fill up in the evening.
  • Carry snacks. Once you’ve found your fireworks spot, you won’t want to give it up for a 40-minute food queue. A bag of snacks and refillable water bottles are the difference between a good last two hours and a miserable one.
  • Consider a restaurant with a view. A few resort restaurants near Magic Kingdom and EPCOT look out towards the fireworks. They’re booked solid on the night, but if you can get one it’s the most comfortable way to see in the new year at Disney.

Our Disney World dining guide explains how the reservation window works.

What the weather is like on New Year’s Eve

Late December in Orlando is usually mild by day and cool at night, and that gap matters when you’re standing still outdoors at midnight after a warm afternoon. A day that peaks in the mid-70s°F can drop into the 50s°F, or occasionally lower, by the time the fireworks start. People dressed for the afternoon end up shivering through the countdown, or buying an expensive sweatshirt in a gift shop.

Bring a layer you can tie round your waist during the day, and long trousers or leggings for the evening if you run cold. Rain on New Year’s Eve is less common than in summer, but a cold front can bring showers and wind. A lightweight poncho weighs almost nothing and saves the night if it does. Our Orlando weather guide has month-by-month averages.

Costs to plan for

New Year’s Eve is expensive before you add anything special:

  • Park tickets are at or near their highest prices of the year for the holiday week. See our Disney World ticket prices guide.
  • Hotels charge peak holiday rates, often with minimum-stay rules.
  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass (roughly $15–45 per person per day in 2026, demand-priced) sits at the top of its range on peak days, and availability disappears quickly.
  • Special dining and parties, whether a Universal hotel event or a CityWalk venue package, add anything from a modest cover charge to well over $1,000.

Whether it’s worth paying peak prices for New Year’s Eve itself is a fair question. For most families, the best value of that holiday fortnight is in the quieter days just before Christmas or in mid-January, not on the 31st. Our Orlando crowd calendar shows how sharply the crowds drop after the first week of January.

Who should (and shouldn’t) do New Year’s Eve in the parks

Do it if… Skip it if…
Midnight fireworks in a park is a bucket-list moment for you You’re travelling with toddlers or young children
You’re adults who enjoy a big crowd and a party atmosphere Anyone in your group struggles with crowds or long days on their feet
You’re staying on-site, ideally within walking distance or a Skyliner ride Your main goal is riding attractions
You’ll arrive at opening and stay put You were planning to park hop in for the evening

FAQ: New Year’s Eve at Disney World and Universal

What time are the New Year’s Eve fireworks at Disney World?

On New Year’s Eve 2025, Magic Kingdom ran Fantasy in the Sky at 7:30pm and 11:50pm, EPCOT ran Cheers to the New Year at 11:54pm, and Hollywood Studios ran its New Year Countdown Fireworks at 11:57pm. The 2026 schedule had not been announced as of September 2026; Disney confirmed 2025’s in late October.

Does Magic Kingdom close on New Year’s Eve?

It doesn’t close, but it can reach capacity and stop admitting guests. On New Year’s Eve 2025, Magic Kingdom and EPCOT were both expected to fill early, likely before 10am. Arrive at opening and stay inside.

Can I see the New Year’s fireworks on a different night?

Yes. In 2025, Magic Kingdom ran the same Fantasy in the Sky show twice on 30 December as well as 31 December. The 30th is a noticeably easier night to see it.

Is Animal Kingdom open late on New Year’s Eve?

No. In 2025 Animal Kingdom was open 8am to 6pm, with no New Year show.

What does Universal Orlando do for New Year’s Eve?

In 2025, Universal Studios Florida was open until 1am with DJ entertainment from 6:30pm and fireworks at midnight. Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe were open until midnight, and CityWalk’s celebration ran 4pm to 2am. The Holidays at Universal Orlando season, including Grinchmas and the Hogwarts Castle projection show, is still running on the night.

Is the EPCOT Festival of the Holidays open on New Year’s Eve?

Not in 2026. The festival runs 27 November to 30 December 2026, finishing the day before New Year’s Eve.

How do I get back to my hotel after the Disney fireworks?

Expect long queues for buses, monorail and boats, and heavy traffic if you drove. Resorts reachable on foot or by Skyliner are the easiest. Waiting 30 minutes before joining the exit crowd often gets you home at about the same time with far less crush.

Is New Year’s Eve at Disney World worth it with kids?

Usually not inside a park at midnight. Magic Kingdom on 30 December with the 7:30pm fireworks, or resort viewing on the 31st, gives young children the magic without a 15-hour day.
